There is something about a well-dressed traditional marquee that no modern aluminium structure quite replicates. The wooden poles, the tensioned canvas, the particular quality of light that comes through ivory lining on a summer afternoon — it creates an atmosphere that feels both timeless and completely of the moment. For smaller events in the right setting, it is genuinely difficult to improve on.
Traditional marquees have practical requirements that clear-span structures do not — principally the space needed for guy ropes — but for events where the feel of the space is as important as its size, those considerations are usually straightforward to accommodate.

Traditional pole marquees are built in standard width bays — typically 6m, 9m or 12m wide, at varying lengths. Common configurations:

A note on site space: traditional pole structures require a clear perimeter beyond the canvas for guy ropes — typically 2.5m to 3m on each side. The overall footprint is considerably larger than the internal dimensions suggest. We will assess your site when we visit and confirm what will fit before anything is agreed.
Pricing
Traditional pole marquees are priced by structure size, specification, and hire duration. As a guide:
- A smaller setup (6m × 9m, weekend hire, lining and flooring included) starts from £[X]
- A full wedding specification (9m × 18m or larger, five-day hire, full lining, flooring and lighting) typically falls in the range £[X]–£[X]

Frequently asked questions
How much space do I need for a traditional pole marquee?
More than the internal dimensions alone. Guy ropes extend 2.5m to 3m beyond the canvas on all sides, so a 9m × 18m structure requires a clear area of roughly 15m × 24m. There also needs to be practical access for our vehicle and equipment. If you can send us a photograph of the site or a rough sketch, we can tell you what will work before you commit to anything.
How does a traditional marquee perform in rain?
Well. The canvas is treated and waterproof, and the structure sheds water effectively when correctly pitched. In sustained rain, the main practical consideration is the ground around the entrance — we will advise on matting or temporary paths if the site calls for it. Traditional marquees have been managing the British climate for a long time. They are well suited to it.
Is a traditional marquee less expensive than a clear-span?
At the same size, generally yes. The materials are less expensive and the installation is typically quicker. The trade-off is flexibility: clear-span structures can be built larger, offer a cleaner interior, and do not require the same perimeter clearance.
